Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Muscle and tissue weakness, especially in the abdominal area, may result in the development of a hernia, a condition whereby organs push through the muscle and tissue walls forming a bulge which can lead to life-threatening complications. To rectify it, doctors often recommend laparoscopic hernia surgery. It’s an invasive procedure but obviously, it’s never for aesthetic purposes.

Hernias are characterized by nausea, vomiting, pain, and discomfort in the chest and abdominal area. There are different types of hernias which include;

Surgical hernia

This develops as a result of intestines protruding through a surgical scar following an abdominal surgery either during pregnancy or after engaging in a strenuous activity that strains the abdominal muscles.

Inguinal hernia

This is the most common type of hernia that occurs as a result of intestines creating a bulge by pushing through the inguinal canal.

Umbilical hernia

This occurs most frequently in children whereby the intestines push through the umbilical cord creating a bulge.

Hiatal hernia

This occurs when the stomach pushes via the diaphragm and goes into the chest cavity.

The procedure of a laparoscopic hernia surgery

The procedure is done after administration of general anesthesia after which small incisions are made on the abdominal area. Carbon dioxide gas is inflated into the abdominal area enlarging it and creating better visualization space. A laparoscope and laparoscopic surgical instruments are inserted via the incisions after which the doctor repairs the hernia bulge by repositioning it correctly and covering it with a mesh.
After completion of the surgical procedure, the incisions are closed and dresses for recovery.

Postoperative care following laparoscopic hernia surgery

For proper and quick healing after the procedure, it is important to laparoscopic hernia surgeryavoid strenuous activities that might exert pressure on the surgical site, ensuring proper diet with high fiber content food that reduces the risk of developing constipation and taking prescribed medications including pain relievers and antibiotics.

Precautions should be taken before forming laparoscopic hernia surgery to patients with smoking problems, blood clot and bleeding problems, pregnant mothers, advanced age, lung and heart diseases and this can worsen complications
