Urology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases, treatment, and surgery of the urologic complications of both males and females and also the male reproductive system. When one needs to have their kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra, ureters, adrenal glands or the entire male reproductive system checked, they will be referred to a urologist.

A Urologic surgery occurs when nonsurgical methods or medications fail to relieve the symptoms of the patient. This is usually for conditions such as obstructions, malignancies, inflammatory diseases, cancer, kidney stones, enlarged prostate among others. No matter how seamless a surgery goes, no matter how perfect a patient is, every seasoned surgeon knows that an unexpected complication can arise.

Here is a list of some of the complications that could happen during or after urologic surgery.

·Vascular injuries

These are the most common and they lead to blood loss, multiple organ failure, and even death. They can happen at any phase of the procedure.

·Urine leakage.
This is the more common complication arising out of urologic surgery. A cystography should be done to detect the origin of the leakage and a catheter is inserted to for an average of 10 days.

·Impotence

In the case of surgery on the male reproductive organs, impotence is a likely outcome and the impact on the patient’s sexual health must be discussed with both them and their partners prior to the surgery.

·Perforation of the organs
This can be an accidental cut that goes deeper than was intended during surgery and can lead to over bleeding and even death.

·Retrograde ejaculation It’s a condition where semen enters the bladder instead of going to the penis during intercourse. It mostly occurs after procedures like prostate surgery, bladder neck surgery or surgery for testicular cancer.

Complications arising from urologic surgery are only about 7.8% low and there are many highly trained professionals equipped with the skills to carry out flawless procedures.
