Before one goes into surgery, they must be advised on the procedures, outcomes and what to expect after the surgery. Complications after bladder surgery are rare and minor pain after surgery is normal, but painkillers should be able to ease it. However, worst complications may happen like; bleeding, over-reactive bladder, blood clots, injury of neighboring organs like the urethra and infections brought on by the catheter.
There are a few reasons why a person could have surgery on their bladder. It could be to stop incontinence that has failed to improve with non-surgical methods, to stop the spread of bladder cancer or due to tumors in the pelvic area. In some cases like cancer, the bladder is totally removed while in other incidents like urine leakage or incontinence, a bladder suspension is done.
After surgery one is usually sore and in lots of pain. In the recovery room, doctors and nurses monitor the patients, administer pain killers and give them fluids. They will have a catheter and they will be shown how to take care of it in case they have to leave the hospital with it. Here are a few rules one must follow during a bladder surgery recovery period that takes 6-8 weeks.
1.Women should not use tampons or douches during this time. They should let the area heal uninterrupted before they can insert anything. Even douches are not advised.
2.No sexual intercourse. Besides it being extremely painful, the flesh in the vaginal area is still tender and the sutures have not really firmed so one risks tearing themselves apart.
3.Strenuous exercise should be put on hold. Let the body recover and heal itself first before you can attempt to do any strenuous activity again.
4.Avoid constipation. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables plus drinking lots of water so that one does not strain when passing stool. In the event of constipation, there are over the counter pills to loosen the stool that one must take.
5.Walk to avoid blood clots and to also speed up the healing process.
